Services

Designest is available on an hourly or project basis for all phases and stages of product development. From concept development, visualization, technical elaboration to the complete exterior design of all possible products. Versatile and complete. Conceived and executed from A to Z if required. From electrical outlet to car interior, Designest has extensive experience in the segments ‘Man & Mobility’ (mobility products) and ‘Man & Activity’ (utilitarian objects). We have a wealth of experience in industrial design at leading companies. Designest works with software programs such as Illustrator, Vectonator, Sketchbook, Blender and Rhino. To develop each project not only 2D conceptually but also 3D into a fully manufacturable product.

Services we provide:

In order of the regular process of product design and development, Designest can be used for the following (mix) of services. As part of the chain, or the complete process.

Product concept at the sketch level

Sometimes a quick idea visualization is appropriate, without the need to work it out in detail. With simple sketches, you can explain a product idea to your organization or client. Apart from the core idea, you can use it to show what you expect the product to look like. At this level, it’s all about outlining concepts and communication (getting a production order). Therefore, production costs and techniques are not yet taken into account as much.

Product concept at the 3D model level

This phase usually follows after the sketches are made. Based on the sketch proposals, choices and adjustment suggestions are made. From there, the desire arises to develop the concept further using a 3D drawing program. Or even to work out the concept 3-dimensionally (thus also physically tangible). For example in a 1/1 PU foam model). In this phase we get into the details of the possible production techniques and costs.

Creating a working prototype

The next step is to produce a further developed prototype with regard to ergonomics, operation, strength of construction and other technical properties. The design at this stage is usually not yet the final one, because it sometimes need to be modified due to functional and technical choices made later.

Work model testing and optimization

Another next step is to assess together with the client how the product working model works and whether the execution meets the final (often adjusted during the process) requirements package. Requirements that were not considered essential in retrospect are dropped and progressive insight sometimes lead to additional conditions. In this phase, tests are used to determine whether the product concept still needs to be adjusted (optimized).

Optimizing the design

Once all functional and technical aspects of the product to be designed have been definitively determined, the design can be finalized. The first sketch proposals are the basis, modified bit by bit in each subsequent process step. No design is ‘right’ all at once. Every design process is a continuous search for perfect form combined with functionality, technology, operational workability and production price.

Adapting concept to production techniques

In a final stage of product development, optimal production capabilities are determined for the design. For example, if one choice is to injection mold a product element, then it must determined if that is technically possible, within the other requirements set. For example, whether the wall thickness is not too thick, in connection with the shrinkage effect of the chosen type of plastic.

Making the design production-ready

When design, functional and technical specifications are finally determined and prototypes are tested, all necessary files (3D and 2D) are prepared, which the client needs when preparing the (mass) production of the new product.

Cost & pricing

Every project has specific challenges, wishes and requirements. For that reason, it is difficult to determine the costs in advance, in order to arrive at an optimal, working concept. Nevertheless, most companies’ budgets for product development are predetermined and task-setting.

Would you like to know in advance what a new product design will cost? Then ask Designest to calculate the production budget you need to take into account. Has the budget framework already been established? Let Designest consider your options with you after that.

We’ll always come up with a solution together to make the intended product design a reality.
